Kansas basketball made the final cut for Mackenzie Mgbako, one of the most highly touted recruits in the Class of 2023.

Mackenzie Mgbako has cut his list of schools to two, and the Kansas Jayhawks are among his final choices. He canceled the visit to Louisville that he had this week and removed St. John’s from his options. Now, the two remaining suitors for him are Indiana and Kansas.

It is not much of a surprise, as he has been KU’s top priority since they had Hunter Dickinson commit to the school. However, it reaffirms that Mgbako views Kansas as one of his leading choices.

Mgbako, who requested to be released from his NLI at Duke in April, is one of the best players in the Class of 2023. In the final 247 Sports recruiting rankings, he finished No. 10 in the country with a grade of 98.00.

He delivers a combination of size, shooting, and athleticism to whichever school he picks. Mgbako is widely considered to be one of the best jump shooters on the market.

Even though he will likely be a one-and-done at Kansas, he has the maturity level of a four or five-year college player. Mgbako would be an immediate candidate to start alongside Hunter Dickinson and rival KJ Adams for minutes.

As a senior, Mgbako led Roselle Catholic to a New Jersey state championship. He averaged 16.3 points and sunk almost two three-pointers per game.

With Jaylon Tyson recently committing to Cal, it is paramount that Bill Self’s coaching staff lands Mgbako. Next year’s team still lacks shooting, even after the addition of Nick Timberlake.

He canceled his visit to Louisville, a school that was once considered the favorite to land him. It goes to show that if you are competing with Kansas in the recruiting process, things will not go well for you.

Now that his visit to Indiana is complete, we should expect a decision from him within the next few days. It is an important time for KU.
