Despite being connected to Kansas basketball in recent weeks, Jaylon Tyson announced his commitment to Cal University via Twitter.

KU’s offseason has been nothing short of a success. After losing seven players to the portal and three to the NBA Draft, Bill Self recouped his talent level by bringing in three elite transfers.

Two scholarship spots remain for the Kansas Jayhawks, but Jaylon Tyson will not be filling one of them. The Texas Tech transfer committed to the Cal Golden Bears this afternoon.

The move was practically set in stone for the past few days. Tyson received multiple crystal ball picks to Cal last week. He still attended his Kansas visit, but nobody expected him to become a Jayhawk.

As a sophomore, the 6-foot-7 guard averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds. He was incredibly efficient with a superb 48.3/40.2/72.3 slash line. Ultimately, the fit never materialized with Kansas, as he would not have seen the ball enough to make the transfer worthwhile. Tyson now becomes “the guy” for Cal.

Tyson joins former Red Raider Fardaws Aimaq at Cal, as well as ex-TTU assistant coach Matt Scherbenske. Those two players add some much-needed talent to a Golden Bears squad that won just three games in 2022-23, the lowest win total since the creation of its basketball team.

For him to play in 2023-24, the NCAA must grant Tyson an eligibility waiver. He transferred from Texas after his freshman year, making it the second time he has done so. There is a decent chance that he gets one because TTU head coach Mark Adams was fired for racially insensitive comments following the conclusion of the season.

With Tyson off the board, the Jayhawks have entirely shifted their attention to Mackenzie Mgbako. After his final visit to Louisville, he is expected to make a commitment announcement sometime this week. If they miss out on him as well, KU must look for a new wing in the portal.
