Here are a few words that might relieve the Jayhawk faithful — Kansas will not play a basketball game for more than seven months. That news is terrific for any fan who had to live through this team. But those who can stomach the terrors that they’ve witnessed over the past six months, let’s relive the disastrous season that the 2024-25 Kansas basketball team had.
Oct. 14, 2024- Kansas named No. 1 preseason team for second year in a row
Kansas was named the No. 1 team in the country in the preseason for the second straight year. A handful of transfer additions and the return of three senior starters had people bought into the second year of Hunter Dickinson in Lawrence. The Jayhawks entered the campaign with hefty expectations that could hopefully make up for the below-average year they had in 2023-24.
Nov. 8, 2024- Kansas narrowly defeats UNC in highly anticipated matchup
In the second game of the season, Kansas took down North Carolina in a historic battle of blue bloods. It was one of the most anticipated matchups in Allen Fieldhouse in recent history, and the crowd was incredible all game. In typical Phog fashion, Elliot Cadeau missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to move KU to 2-0.
Nov. 26, 2024- Kansas gets by Duke for another marquee nonconference win
While it wasn't the prettiest performance, the Jayhawks were able to survive freshman phenom Cooper Flagg and Duke in the Vegas Showdown. Kansas found a way to pull out a win without Dickinson, who had been ejected in the second half. This was shaping up to be a fantastic year for Kansas.
Dec, 8, 2024- Mizzou defeats Kansas for first time in over a decade
Days after losing the first game of the season to Creighton, the Jayhawks had another road game in Columbia against their bitter rivals. A sloppy showing that featured 22 turnovers allowed the Tigers to defeat Kansas for the first time since the Border Showdown was renewed.
Dec. 31, 2024- West Virginia stuns Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse to open Big 12 play
The team clearly had its faults on the road, losing back-to-back games away from the Fieldhouse. However, Self and Co. gave fans a reason to seriously worry in the conference opener. Kansas lost to the Mountaineers after fouling Javon Small with a little over a second remaining in regulation. All of a sudden, déjà vu kicked in for KU fans from a year ago.
Jan. 25, 2025- Kansas suffers one of the worst home losses in Bill Self era
After moving to 5-2 in conference play, KU gained some momentum in a home meeting with No. 7 Houston. In a thrilling double-overtime game, Kansas inexplicably choked the game away twice due to an inability to make an inbound pass or hit a clutch free throw. This loss turned out to be the most unlikely win between two AP Top 25 teams in nearly 1,500 games and 15 seasons.
Feb. 1, 2025- Kansas blows historic lead in loss to Baylor
Kansas came out firing against Baylor on the road, leading by as many as 21 points. Unfortunately, the Jayhawks could not keep up with their opponent and blew the biggest lead in school history. At this point, fans were completely fed up with the squad.
Feb. 18, 2025- Kansas ties the largest margin of defeat in 21st century against BYU
The road struggles persisted throughout conference play. The Jayhawks waltzed into Provo and got walked down by BYU. KU's 34-point loss tied its biggest margin of loss since they hired Coach Self over 20 years ago. Hope had run out for this team.
Feb. 21, 2025- Tulsa World article reveals that Bill Self listened to offers for Oklahoma State vacancy last year
In a bombshell article, Tulsa World reporter Berry Tramel revealed that Self had considered the Oklahoma State head coaching vacancy during the past offseason. He contended that the Hall of Famer listened to offers from his alma mater, but he pushed back on those reports later that day. Ultimately, nothing came from the rumors.
Mar. 1, 2025- Zeke Mayo posts screenshots of viewers sending him racist, hateful DMs
After another disheartening loss at home to Texas Tech, the team continued to receive backlash from the fanbase. However, it reached an all-time high when KU guard Zeke Mayo posted screenshots of DMs with viewers calling him derogatory names and hateful words. The word "viewers" is highlighted since it is unknown whether they were Jayhawk fans. Regardless, it was a terrible look for the school.
Mar. 20, 2025- Arkansas ends Kansas' season in first round of NCAA Tournament
On Thursday, it all (finally) came to an end. Kansas lost in a way that only they could. A flurry of turnovers and poor decision-making toward the end of the contest effectively ended the Jayhawks' season. Most fans can agree that they won't miss many, if any, aspects of this frustrating team.
