The Kansas Jayhawks are moving into uncharted territory as they are now 17-10 on the season and 8-7 in the Big 12, tied for sixth place with Baylor and TCU. The Jayhawks lost by 34 points last night to BYU on the road, which ties for the largest loss under head coach Bill Self, but to be fair, it could have been worse. BYU emptied their bench with about three minutes to go in the game and Kansas took advantage to not lose by 40 or more points.

For the second game in a row, the Jayhawks fell to an unranked team and their trip to the West was not as successful as Self probably thought it would be. It just seems like this team is lost and doesn't know how to get back to the level that is expected of a Bill Self team. This is a Kansas team that was ranked No. 1 at the start of the season. So what happened?

Well, according to Self, the team just needs to get away from each other. That is right, he said everyone needs to take a day and get away from each other. A statement like that tells everyone that something is wrong in the locker room.

"We need to regroup, get away from each other for a day, and go home," Self said in his postgame press conference.

From the start of the game, Kansas just didn't look like they were ready to play a game last night. The Jayhawks just looked sluggish and couldn't stop anything that BYU was doing. In four od the last five games, KU has started slow and a slow start makes it so they have to have a comeback, or for a game like this one, makes it so that you just keep on digging a hole.

Self said it seemed like this team had one foot in and one foot out right from the start of the game, meaning they just weren't locked in. The question then is, who is responsible for that? Is it coaching? Is it the players that need to just step up? Where is the disconnect?

"We got some things we got to work through because we're going backwards right now," Self said. "It needs to change, and it's got to change on a dime."

At this point, something needs to change fast for this Kansas team because even though they will still more than likely make the NCAA Tournament, their seeding drops with each loss. The Jayhawks need to pull something together or else they will have another early tournament exit. Maybe Self is right, maybe this team just needs some time away from each other because he said it again at the end of his conference.

"I'm talked out," Self said. "We need to get away from each other, I'll tell you that point blank, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to be a team bonding situation, but it hadn't been."

Kansas will get back to Lawrence after what seems like a day off, will come together to get ready for their next matchup on Saturday, February 22 when the Jayhawks take on Oklahoma State at home in the Phog at 3:00 p.m. CT.
