Kansas head coach Bill Self got the best offseason news yet with the commitment of No. 1 2026 recruit Tyran Stokes. After not making a lot of noise in the transfer portal to the dismay of Jayhawks fans, Self is back on the recruiting trail, rounding out his roster.

Now with Stokes signed, Self knows exactly how much he has to spend, but also the type of talent he needs to surround the star power forward. After the big recruiting win, Self now has his sights set on one of the best shooters left in the portal, and it could really make a rival mad.

Kansas State transfer Abdi Bashir had a scheduled Zoom meeting with Self and Kansas in the hope that the Jayhawks could land the elite shooter.

Abdi Bashir could be the scoring boost Kansas needs for Tyran Stokes

It is clear that Bill Self had a plan for when he landed Stokes' commitment based on the players he has brought in through the portal. Self has landed dynamic scorers that can shoot outside the paint, opening things up inside for Stokes to make his moves.

Landing Leroy Blyden Jr. was the first domino to fall for Self to get dynamic shooters. Now, if Kansas can land Bashir, who averaged 13. 2 points per game, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists for Kansas State last season, that would be the final piece Self needs to complete his outside threats.

Not only does Self have Blyden and potentially Bashir, but also Taylen Kinney coming in as well, who is a point guard who knows how to find the basket. Stokes is going to have a lot of work in the paint, but opposing teams are going to game plan for him, so having guys that can still score outside the paint will be essential for Kansas next season.

No decision has come from Bashir about where he will end up, but there was interest from Kansas when he was in the transfer portal before last season, coming from Monmouth.
