Kansas basketball: Jayhawks big man Zuby Ejiofor enters the transfer portal
Zuby Ejiofor is the latest Kansas basketball player to enter the transfer portal. He is the seventh player from last season to do so.
The roster overhaul keeps on coming for the Kansas Jayhawks. Zuby Ejiofor entered the transfer portal today, a corresponding move to Hunter Dickinson’s commitment to KU.
It is a bit surprising to see Ejiofor go after just one season with the program. The No. 57 player in the Class of 2022, he averaged 1.2 points and 1.7 rebounds as a freshman.
Ejiofor is a powerful bruiser-type big who uses his brute strength to score at the rim and grab rebounds. Had he stayed, he would have had a terrific career under Bill Self, but he understandably transferred due to Dickinson’s addition. Being the fifth big man on the depth chart makes his path to playing time cloudier.
Ernest Udeh Jr. was also a transfer candidate after Dickinson announced he would come to Kansas, but he seems to be here to stay. Zuby played very well early in the season before he got injured, collecting seven rebounds in seven minutes vs. North Dakota State.
Kansas will return three scholarship players from the 2022-23 team: Dajuan Harris, KJ Adams, and Udeh Jr. They will need to fill the voids that Kyle Cuffe and Ejiofor left by transferring.
With ten scholarship players remaining on the roster, Bill Self and company will have to bring in at least two more players, barring another transfer. It will likely be a wing player and another big man, though KU could also search for another three-point shooter in the portal.
Mackenzie Mgbako’s visit in Lawrence went very well, and he could commit anytime in the next few days. It seems more and more likely that he is coming now that Ejiofor is gone.
KU is not linked to many other players besides Mgbako, so they will have to do some more scouting with Ejiofor gone.
The Jayhawks are going under a complete roster revamp — perhaps the biggest one that a Bill Self team has ever had.
