What to watch for during 2021 spring practices

The quarterback situation

The Jayhawks’ offense was rarely productive this past season, and while the offensive line will see some changes from new OL coach Lee Grimes, the starting QB job should also be on fans’ minds.

Kansas rotated Miles Kendrick and Jalon Daniels in 2020, a mixture that didn’t seem to channel much progress.

Kendrick didn’t seem to find a consistent click with the offensive, although his athleticism was evident in the bottom half of Kansas’ schedule. This included a decent performance in a close battle with Texas Tech.

In part with injuries, Daniels made a strong impression early in the season but was unable to show his full potential due to a poor offensive line and a shortened season.

This spring, Kansas will have multiple options for the starting job. Incoming quarterback recruits, Conrad Hawley and Ben Easters will join the team for spring practices this semester.

This will open up a new sector for new OC Mike DeBord to survey and see whether or not these two bring something new to the table. We should expect interim HC Jones to have some say in this decision as well.

Along with the quarterbacks already on campus, Kansas found some positive news the other day from North Texas transfer Jason Bean, who has committed his talents to the Jayhawks’ program.

While he won’t join the team until the summer, it does throw another considerable option the coaching staff’s way.
