Kansas Basketball Recruiting: Weekend Recap
By Ryan Noel
The first Live Period for basketball recruiting is over, and the Kansas staff has been out watching some of the top prospects in the country. Who did they see? Who impressed?
The live period featured events in the Nike EYBL circuit, Under Armour Association circuit, and the Adidas Gauntlet series. For most of the weekend, Kansas head coach Bill Self was at Nike flanked by two assistants.

Self and his staff followed the 2017 duo of Michael Porter, Jr. and Trae Young (MoKan Elite) and had three coaching staff members at each of their games this past weekend. Young, as we wrote about earlier, and Porter are arguably the top two priorities for the Jayhawks staff. Rivals.com’s Eric Bossi listed both players as top performers for the weekend.
"The numbers put up by five-star point guard Trae Young speak for themselves: 24.7 points and 5.3 assists per game. He can knock down the three or make a play at the rim. MOKAN Elite made a statement over the weekend as the team to beat. Young did have some turnover troubles (six per game), but his skill is off the charts. He’s conducted in home visits with Kansas and Texas Tech this week."

Deandre Ayton is the other major priority for the Kansas coaching staff, as word came out this week that Kansas is school recruiting him the hardest (and possibly the only school recruiting him). The #1 player in the country also told Rivals.com that he’s not interested in playing overseas and that college is a priority for him.
"On college vs. overseas: “I’m going to college. It’s a must. My mom would tell you that she wants me to go to college and that it’s a must. Overseas, that’s not me. I’m not trying to take risks with my career just to get to the pros fast.”"
While in Indianapolis at EYBL Session #2, the Kansas coaches also took in games for Kevin Knox, Brandon Randolph, Mo Bamba, Tremont Waters, Nick Richards, Deng Gak, and Troy Brown.
