Our first look at the 2017 recruiting targets for Head Coach Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks is going to focus on the point guards. The rising senior class is deep at the position, and Kansas will be searching for the successor to 3-year starter Frank Mason.

Here at Through The Phog, we’re going to break down these recruiting lists into tiers – Tier 1 recruits are going to be the top priorities, or guys that we know for sure are at the top of the staff’s list. Tier 2 will feature players that Kansas is interested in and have offered, but might be down just a few spots on the staff’s wishlist. Lastly, Tier 3 will feature players that the staff has actively watched, but maybe hasn’t offered (we’ll also be throwing in “offers” for guys that Kansas realistically won’t get or are not really in the running for).

Tier 1

Trae Young – Norman North H.S. (OK) – MoKan Elite (Nike EYBL)

Young is arguably one of the top two point guards in the 2017 class, and rests comfortably at the top of Kansas’ wishlist for 2017. While early on his name was attached to top wing Michael Porter, Jr., Young is worthy of Tier 1 status based on his play and potential alone.

As a point guard, he’s an exceptional passer that has a flair for making both the spectacular and the correct pass on any play. His ability to run an offense is already apparent, and his ballhandling is superb. Where Young has made his name, though, is with his long range shooting. He is one of the best shooters in the class – something that is rare in elite points guards over the past few classes.

From what we’ve been hearing over the course of the year, we’re comfortable listing Young is the only player in Tier 1 for Point Guards. He’s arguably the top target in the class as a whole right now for Coach Self.

School List: Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma

Currently, Kentucky holds a heavy advantage in his 247Sports Crystal Ball, though his process is far from over. From what we’ve heard, Young will take his visits before making a decision.
