The Kentucky Wildcats thought they had won the race for consensus No. 1 overall high school basketball recruit Tyran Stokes. Then one of their coaches jumped the gun.

In an embarrassing move that has become laughable content for Kansas Jayhawks fans, Kentucky assistant coach Mo Williams fired off a tweet that is also being seen more seriously by some as a notable recruiting violation rather than just a premature celebration.

Here's how it went...

Stokes took to "X" (formerly known as Twitter), saying "6:30 est, espn Inside The NBA!", referencing his highly anticipated commitment announcement. Williams, just 14 minutes later, responded "Let's gooooooooooooo."

The post has since been deleted, which is about the best someone like Williams could do after such a folly.

It is clear that he thought the Wildcats had bagged Stokes after a toughly fought battle against the Jayhawks, but it is also majorly unprofessional, and is being seen as such, to imply a recruit has been landed by a program before it is officially announced.

Kansas spurning Kentucky made even better after Mo Williams makes his social media gaffe

There was plenty of backlash from fans and beyond after Williams fired off that unfortunate social media post. Some pointed to the embarrassment in general and the way he did the Kentucky faithful a disservice by getting their hopes up.

But there was also scrutiny around the ethics themselves and how Williams may have even violated NCAA rules. While it is not the most heinous infraction, it does look like Kentucky men's basketball coach Mark Pope's assistant did indeed cross a line that is not allowed in college basketball.

Such is referenced in NCAA Bylaw 13.10.1.9.

It states that staff members of an athletic department are not permitted to comment publicly on or mention a recruit on social media platforms before the recruit has signed officially signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) or a written commitment that can be seen as comparable.

Whether or not Williams is publicly reprimanded or if he or the program make a statement at some point will be something to watch.

Kansas lands No. 1 recruit for 2026 cycle in Tyran Stokes

Regardless of the opinion surrounding Williams' actions, when the dust settles, Stokes is still a member of the Kansas Jayhawks. That much is not going to chance for the foreseeable future.

Stokes seems content and confident in his choice, speaking on his decision to go with Kansas ahead of all of the other prestigious programs that were pursuing him in the process.

“It’s been a long journey. I’m grateful,” Stokes said on Inside The NBA. “I am taking my talents to the University of Kansas.”

Head coach Bill Self and the relationship Stokes built with him was one of the biggest factors in Stokes' decision.

"He’s been there from the beginning. He’s always fed into me. (Self) gave me great advice through the entire process.”

After a standout high school career, it will be interesting to watch just how much Stokes elevates Kansas when he takes the court at the next level.
