We know, we know. Nobody among the Jayhawk fanbase is happy with the 1-4 start by the Kansas football team this season. Head coach Lance Leipold's group has let four games slip away in what was supposed to be a magical year for the program.

The same squad picked fourth in the Big 12 preseason poll is now fighting to keep its head above water and remain bowl-eligible. It has taken a turn for the worse since KU's misfortunes began after a road loss to Illinois. Ahead of Week 6 of the college football season, On3.com contributor Dan Morrison released his latest Big 12 Football Power Rankings, and fans cannot argue with his placement of Kansas:

Kansas football finishes second-to-last in recent Big 12 power rankings

Although it's a tough pill to swallow, Kansas has seriously been a bottom-three team in the new-look Big 12 this season. Inconsistent efforts by the offense and defense have doomed KU week in and week out, yet the coaching staff has failed to make the necessary adjustments.

Since a season-opening victory over FCS opponent Lindenwood, nothing has gone right in Lawrence. The Fighting Illini surmounted a fourth-quarter deficit in what should have been a sure-fire victory in Week 2. Kansas followed that game up by allowing game-winning touchdowns in the final minutes of the UNLV and West Virginia contests. There is not much to be said about last week's outing vs. TCU.

While there have been competitive outings, KU simply cannot close out games. Nobody predicted Kansas would sit alongside Big 12 bottom feeders like Houston and Baylor, but that's the situation the Jayhawks have dug themselves into.

Maybe the team's record would be better if Andy Kotelnicki had never left for Penn State, and they might be undefeated if not for some untimely bad throws by Jalon Daniels. But at the end of the day, the Jayhawks must attempt to salvage whatever is left of this disastrous season starting this week against Arizona State.
