Bill Self and the Kansas basketball program are known for scheduling some of the toughest nonconference schedules in the sport. The Jayhawks typically face off against multiple premier schools around the country. However, KU could have its most difficult test yet in the 2024-25 season.
Two blue bloods are in close contact and could meet in the upcoming season. In addition to a home-and-home with North Carolina, the Champions Classic against Michigan State, and a potential road game against the reigning champions UConn, multiple sources have reported that Kansas will take on Duke in a neutral site game in November.
Duke, Kansas basketball expected to play in 2024-25 nonconference slate
Since 2011, Duke and Kansas have met every three years as part of the Champions Classic. But this time, the competition will be entirely separate from the event. Instead, it would be a game in The Players Era tournament, an in-season occasion that is supposed to offer up to $2 million in NIL money.
The two programs do not encounter one another often if it is not in the Champions Classic. Kansas defeated Duke in the Elite Eight back in 2018 to reach the Final Four, and the Blue Devils beat KU in the 2011 Maui Invitational Finals. Since Coach Self took over at the helm, the program is 4-2 against Duke.
Assuming the plan does not fall through, it will be the first time in school history that Kansas and Duke compete without legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski on the sidelines. Former player Jon Scheyer took over in 2022 and led the Blue Devils to an Elite Eight appearance in his second season.
While the Jayhawks are expected to enter the preseason as one of the favorites to win a national title, the players have their work cut out for them against these top schools. More details should arise soon, but no time, date, or venue has been set as of this moment.
