5% to blame: The Daniel Hishaw Jr. injury

To be clear, this tiniest slice of blame pie is not for Daniel Hishaw Jr., rather it is his unfortunate injury that forced him to miss this UNLV game. Hishaw Jr. has been superb so far this year, recording 105 yards on a mere 16 carries (6.6 yards per carry). He is a great 1-2 punch with Devin Neal, so when Hishaw Jr. was ruled out, it was a huge blow.

Sevion Morrison was the stand-in backup RB, but the Jayhawks coaching staff elected to lean solely on Devin Neal instead, as Morrison did not see a single carry. Morrison did have a nice 18-yard catch, but Hishaw Jr. was certainly missed against UNLV. His explosiveness and ability to break tackles and carry defenders for additional yardage would have been a nice boost to have in the 2nd half especially.

The Jayhawks will now head back out on the road to face off with West Virginia on Saturday, September 21st. This game against WVU (and honestly every game moving forward) is now a must-win for Kansas to keep their hopes alive of making the College Football Playoff.
