The 2024 Kansas football season came to an unsightly ending when the Jayhawks fell in a blowout loss to Baylor. Lance Leipold's squad willed its way from a 1-5 start to nearly achieving bowl eligibility, but they fell just short despite winning three consecutive games against ranked opponents.

While KU didn't have the campaign many expected, it quickly pivoted toward reloading its roster for the 2025 campaign in the transfer portal. After losing half of the team's starters to graduation, the Jayhawks have already secured commitments from 15 transfer players. According to Rivals, Kansas currently boasts the No. 4 transfer portal class in the nation, trailing only powerhouse programs like Ole Miss and LSU.

Kansas football is assembling its best transfer class ever

While some elite programs are still focused on bowl preparations, Kansas has taken advantage of its head start. Moving quickly in the portal could be important down the stretch as other schools ramp up their recruiting activity in the weeks ahead.

Despite enduring a rocky year, hope is far from lost in Lawrence. Returning talent like star quarterback Jalon Daniels provides plenty of excitement for the Jayhawk faithful. Additionally, Coach Leipold has not only retained several key players but also welcomed back a familiar face. Defensive tackle Gage Keys is returning to Kansas after a brief stint at Auburn, rejoining the program for his senior season.

The Jayhawks’ transfer haul includes some high-profile additions. Former Alabama defensive back Jahlil Hurley brings SEC-caliber talent to the secondary. North Texas offensive lineman Tyler Mercer bolsters the trenches and provides immediate size. Meanwhile, former Oklahoma and Utah State cornerback DJ Graham adds much-needed depth to the defensive backfield following the departures of Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson.

With these moves, Kansas appears well-positioned to make noise in the Big 12 in 2025. Leipold and his staff have sent a clear message that they’re determined to keep the program on an upward trajectory.
