The Kansas football defense finally showed up last game against Houston, surrounding just 14 points and keeping the Cougars' offense quiet for the majority of the contest. While they moved the ball down the field often, the Jayhawks came away with four turnovers to set themselves up with fantastic field position.

Jayhawk fans should especially appreciate senior cornerback Cobee Bryant for the defensive clinic he put on. He only allowed two catches on six targets and finished with a whopping three interceptions, tying the school's all-time record for picks in a single game. Unsurprisingly, the Preseason All-Big 12 First Team was awarded generously following his performance.

Cobee Bryant named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week and more

Bryant was issued three awards on Monday, including the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award National Defensive Back of the Week, and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Have a day, Cobee!

He rightfully earned recognition from multiple outlets around the country. Pro Football Focus gave him an 83.8 coverage grade in the win, one of the highest in the country last week. He only allowed a 14.6 passer rating for the six balls thrown his way. It was truly a lockdown performance from a lockdown corner, albeit one who had played below his normal level during the prior weeks.

The three interceptions he caught cemented his name in Kansas football history. The only other player to do so was Bill Crank in 1958. Bryant now sits at 23 tackles, four interceptions, two tackles for loss, and four pass break-ups in 2024.

Here is the press release from the Big 12: "With three interceptions in his team's win over Houston, Bryant tied the KU program record and became the first Jayhawk to pick off three passes in a game since 1958. He also became the first player in FBS to record a trio of interceptions in a game this season and the first Big 12 player to accomplish the feat in a conference game since K-State's Allen Champman in 2012. Bryant also tallied three tackles, including a tackle for a loss on Saturday."
