With the elite cornerback duo of Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson graduating this past season, Lance Leipold needed to replenish the defensive backfield for the Kansas football team. He did so by adding DJ Graham II and Jahlil Hurley in addition to returning players like Jalen Todd and Jameel Croft.
However, the Jayhawks recently made an unexpected move in the spring portal window. They received a commitment from Syeed Gibbs, a former Georgia Tech corner with two remaining years of eligibility.

Syeed Gibbs is a great late-offseason pickup for Kansas football
Gibbs entered the transfer portal early last week, and he found a new destination relatively quickly. He comes to KU with two years of eligibility remaining and the chance to compete for a starting spot.
After appearing in just four games in the 2022 season, Gibbs was terrific in his redshirt freshman year, totaling three interceptions, 52 tackles, and six passes defended at Rhode Island. He then transferred to Georgia Tech, where he had a more difficult time seeing the field. He appeared in 10 games (six starts) but only totaled 22 tackles and one pass defended this past season.
While he posted an underwhelming 54.1 Pro Football Focus grade in 2024, KU severely lacked cornerback depth before the addition. The former FCS All-American is a 6-foot, 190-pound cornerback who specializes in the slot. He has Power 4 experience and could see significant snaps in his first year in Lawrence.
Other Kansas football transfer portal news
Kansas made headlines after landing its first portal commitment of the spring days ago in Leroy Harris, a defensive end who previously played at Chattanooga. The news came after Bai Jobe transferred from the program. Jobe was a former 4-star recruit who started at Michigan State before heading to the Jayhawks, but he appears to have multiple players ahead of him on the depth chart.
