The NCAA, in its usual, bumbling, incompetent fashion, has created a mass of chaos in college sports. It is affecting Kansas basketball right now but has also created havoc for football too.
Because of various, and sometimes contradictory, court rulings, which players might be eligible to play another season, if any, is still up in the air. As colleges across the country are going back in session, the deadline for many of these players is approaching, and coaches are in limbo.
Kansas basketball has two roster spots for the 2026-27 season open, and at this point, no one knows if they can be filled.
Has the door closed on Tre White returning to Kansas?
There is still a slim chance that White can return to KU, if both parties are still interested. The longer it takes for the courts and the conferences to sort out what will be allowed and what won't be, the slimmer that chance becomes.
It is doubtful now that White, or anyone else from his Class of 2022, will be eligible to play for KU or anyone else. What makes this all so sad is the NCAA could have avoided all of this with some foresight. Its five-in-five rule was full of good intent, but the fact that rule did not include Whate's class has made it an abomination to college sports.
It will be surprising if KU adds White at this point. There is still a long way to go, and the court system truly hasn't helped do anything but add to the chaos.
Kansas is recruiting small forwards for 2027
When Javon Bardwell reclassified and decommitted from Kansas, it left a void on next season's roster. Freshman sensation Tyran Stokes will likely be at KU just for one season, so now head coach Bill Self needs to find a replacement.
KU has been linked to a pair of small forwards. International youngster Fabian Kayser visited the Jayhawks last week. Kayser would bring a potential NBA-like set of skills, including his ability to shoot.
The second small is forward is Malachi Jordan, the 23rd-ranked player in his class, according to 247Sports. At 17, he has the reputation of being strong at the rim but still plenty of room for improving his overall game.
Jordan is set to visit Kansas in a couple of weeks. Adding either or both Kayser and Jordan would get Self off to a terrific start in adding to the roster for 2027. As of now, he doesn't have any prospects committed for next season.
Gary Parrish is not impressed by the Kansas basketball roster
In his most recent rankings for CBS Sports, Gary Parrish has ignored Kansas completely. The Jayhawks are completely absent from his top 26.
Considering that the Jayhawks will feature two top-20 recruits in Stokes and Taylen Kinney, this seems like an oversight. Add in solid transfers like Keanu Dawes, Leroy Blyden Jr., Dennis Parker Jr., and Christian Reeves, and you'd think Kansas would be ranked.
The Jayhawks have been disappointing since winning it all in 2022. Recent seasons have not played out as planned, and each has ended during the first weekend of March Madness. This season must be better, for Self's legacy and for the program overall. Look for KU to prove Parrish wrong.
