This week, Kansas basketball is reportedly hosting an international player from Germany named Fabian Kayser for the 2027 season. Kayser is just 17 years old but has experience playing in the Real Madrid U21 Liga.

Shay Wildeboor from On3's Jayhawk Slant (subscription required) says that KU is bringing Kayser this week on a recruiting visit. Kansas and head coach Bill Self are not allowed to comment on whom they may be recruiting.

It looks as if KU had the small forward position locked down for a couple of years. Tyran Stokes is in the fold, though he is most certainly a one-and-done player, and the Jayhawks had a commitment for 2027 from Javon Bardwell in hand. However, Bardwell reclassified into the 2026 recruiting class and decided he would rather not play a backup role to Stokes this season, so he opened his recruitment back up.

Though Kansas has some players on the roster who might be able to fill that role next year with proper development, it is always good building up your depth for the future.

What Fabian Kayser might bring to Kansas basketball

At 17, Kayser is already six-foot-eight, 220 lbs. It is possible you still might grow an inch or two. At first glance, he seems like he might be someone who will need time to develop, but NBA Draft Room provided a solid scouting report that indicated he might be ready more immediately.

"A big guard/wing with an advanced offensive game, Kayser can really shoot the rock and has a shot that projects well the NBA level. He’s got ideal size for a wing and solid athleticism, although is still growing into his body. Can handle the rock, get into the lane and put pressure on the defense with his driving ability. Is very crafty with the ball and knows how to use his big frame to shield defenders.
Has a nice mid range and floater game. At this early stage he looks like one of the elite prospects in the 2009 generation."

This is looks like a player who can contribute quickly. He seems to be similar to recent players like Grady Dick and Johnny Furphy, though Kayser might be more polished at the same stage. Still, both of those players were good enough to play one season at KU, then step into the NBA.

The Jayhawks currently have a young roster, but that could change, depending on who Self adds to fill the last two spots. It's unclear how many players Self wants to add for 2027, but only Christian Reeves will play out his eligibility. Of course, it is likely that Stokes will be gone as well. Other players like Tylan Kinney and Keanu Dawes could play their way into NBA consideration.

Of course, in the NIL era, there will be roster turnover each season. It is Self's job to not only coach the team but also hold as much of the roster together as he can, something he has not excelled at recently.

Kayser would be a great player to be the first addition to the 2027 roster. He might be be the one to fill the void that Stokes' likely departure and Bardwell's decommittment will leave. Self isn't as active in international recruiting as some others, but he usually hits on those players he does target.
