Perimeter shooting was often a concern for the Kansas basketball team this past season, and the Jayhawks still have work to do in the transfer portal in that aspect. It appears that Bill Self is scouting several players to fill that void.
UTEP transfer Ahamad Bynum spoke to Rivals about the top schools he is interested in right now. One of them was Kansas, along with Seton Hall and Pittsburgh. A 6-foot-3 sharpshooting guard, Bynum is a reasonable target as a bench piece in Lawrence.
Ahamad Bynum is one of the top shooters in the portal
After beginning his career at DePaul, Bynum played at UTEP last year and appeared in 29 contests (seven starts). He averaged 10.3 points and 1.7 rebounds, doing most of his work beyond the arc. Bynum shot 44.4% from 3-point range on 5.3 attempts per game.
The Kansas City Star's Shreyas Laddha noted that Coach Self once recruited Bynum's uncle, Will Bynum, out of high school over 20 years ago. He spoke about his ongoing recruitment in an interview with The Star.
“It was surprising to me, man,” Bynum said about KU's interest in him. “I didn’t think they were going to look my way.”
Kansas still has four open scholarships and is connected with players like Darrion Williams, among others.
Of course, Bynum could be using a school like KU as leverage to other schools, as there are more proven options for the Jayhawks to target in the portal. Still, he has two years of eligibility remaining and could bud into an important player to the program over time.
Many fans have raised concerns about the Jayhawks' outside shooting for the upcoming season, so adding a player like Bynum would certainly ease those worries. Keep an eye on Bynum and any potential updates about a visit to campus.
