Bill Self pinpoints the most outspoken leader on the Kansas Jayhawks roster

Kansas basketball has hit rock bottom after Tuesday’s loss to BYU. It was just the latest chapter in what has been a shockingly underwhelming season for the Jayhawks.

For weeks, the team has looked disinterested and lackadaisical on both ends of the floor. Once considered a title contender, Bill Self’s squad now seems completely lost.

What’s behind the team’s recent lack of effort? Perhaps a lack of leadership. Coach Self admitted that transfer guard David Coit has been the most vocal presence in the locker room, though he’d prefer that role to belong to Dajuan Harris.

David Coit is the Kansas basketball team's driving force

For those who have watched the Jayhawks in 2024-25, these comments should not come as a surprise. Even when Coit's shot is not falling, he brings energy to the floor and is always active defensively.

Coit was the only player who showed any fight in Tuesday’s blowout loss to BYU. He scored 11 points and hit three 3-pointers in 14 minutes. Despite a midseason shooting slump, Coit has picked up his play in recent weeks. Over the last seven contests, he is averaging 6.0 points and 1.4 rebounds, knocking down 42.9% of his 3-point attempts.

Quite frankly, it is disappointing that Self has to publicly call out his sixth-year senior to be more vocal. For players like he and KJ Adams who have spent their entire collegiate careers in Lawrence, those conversations should not need to happen. Then again, the on-court performance has reflected that there haven't been many leaders this season.

Coit still has another year left of eligibility thanks to the NCAA blanket waiver for former JUCO athletes. He plans to exercise it and may spend it at KU. Considering he has been one of the few bright spots on the current roster, the Jayhawks would welcome him back with open arms.
