Arterio Morris arrested, officially dismissed from the Kansas basketball program
Per a report from The Kansas City Star, Kansas basketball guard Arterio Morris was arrested and dismissed from the program today.
Two weeks after the Kansas Jayhawks suspended Morris for an alleged rape he committed in McCarthy Hall, he has been let go by the program. The former 5-star guard and Texas transfer will never play a game in the crimson and blue.
Morris had a similar incident before he began his freshman season in Austin. His ex-girlfriend accused him of assaulting her, and he had a trial date set for this year, but his charge was relegated to a Class C misdemeanor assault without jail time.
In the 2022-23 season, Morris did not live up to expectations as a Longhorn. He played behind several upperclassmen guards and was only able to muster up averages of 4.6 points and 1.4 rebounds. However, he was said to have made tremendous strides in the offseason.
During the team’s offseason trip to Puerto Rico, he averaged 13.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 steals per contest on 55.0% field goal shooting. Morris was widely considered the favorite to start alongside Dajuan Harris at the shooting guard position.
With Morris officially away from the team, Elmarko Jackson and Johnny Furphy should see an increased role in his absence. Freshman Jamari McDowell could also see a few extra minutes if he is not redshirted.
Bill Self is not looking to add any additional pieces to the Kansas basketball roster. Because Morris enrolled at KU and had been practicing with the team, he will count toward the program’s self-imposed scholarship limit. He released this statement:
“When we learned of allegations regarding Arterio Morris, he was suspended from the Kansas men’s basketball program. We are now aware he has been arrested and charged, and he was dismissed from the program. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are not able to comment further at this time.”
