Former Jayhawks star Dedric Lawson is the latest addition to the Kansas basketball alumni team in The Basketball Tournament (TBT).

The Kansas Jayhawks have produced a long list of impressive names throughout their basketball program’s illustrious history. Some of the best KU players in the 21st century are joining Mass Street TBT this summer.

Dedric Lawson, who last played for Kansas four years ago, will join Tyshawn Taylor, Marcus Garrett, Keith Langford, and Thomas Robinson as a member of the KU alumni team.

After playing two years with the Memphis Tigers, Lawson transferred to Kansas for one season. He sat out a year before averaging 19.4 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in 2018-19, making the All-Big 12 First Team before KU bowed out of the NCAA Tournament against the Auburn Tigers.

Lawson has appeared in NBA Summer League and G-League contests but never a professional game. After going undrafted, he joined the Austin Spurs — San Antonio’s affiliate — and averaged 13.7 points and 8.1 rebounds in his only G-League season.

Lawson hasn’t been signed to an NBA contract since 2020. He currently plays for Beşiktaş Icrypex in the Turkish Basketball Super League.

With the addition of “D-Smoove,” Mass Street has enough players to assemble a starting five. Their first game will come in less than two months on July 19, when they compete in the Wichita Regional.

Dedric is one the most underrated players in recent Kansas basketball history. He has a skill set similar to that of newly acquired transfer Hunter Dickinson, as he is a finesse big who can score at any level, especially in the post. It will be fun for Jayhawks fans to watch him back in action for the first time in several years.
