The Kansas Jayhawks lost their third consecutive series in Big 12 play to Oklahoma baseball. They fell to 21-23 (6-12) on the year.

Baseball is a game of ups and downs, but the Kansas Jayhawks baseball team has not seen many good moments in the past few weeks. After Kansas State and Oklahoma State swept them, they dropped yet another series yesterday after winning the opener — this time to the Sooners in Norman.

KU looked like they were on a roll following an extra-innings win vs. No. 25-ranked Wichita State. They followed that up with a blowout win against Oklahoma on the road. The short-lived win streak put the Jayhawks at .500 with a 21-21 record.

Unfortunately, Kansas dropped the next two games to cap off the series loss. In yesterday’s rubber match, starting pitcher Ethan Bradford did not make it out of the first inning after surrendering five runs. The bullpen cleaned up his mess, but it was not enough, as KU did not score in the final four innings.

Pitching has been a consistent issue with manager Dan Fitzgerald’s squad. The team has allowed an average of 9.4 runs in games they lost. No ballclub will see success with those sorts of numbers.

With less than a month remaining in the season, it is safe to call the Jayhawks’ season disappointing. The best they can finish in conference play is an even 12-12, which is quite unlikely with how they have played recently.

Although the growing pains have been evident in Fitzgerald’s first year, he has taken the program to a better place than it was in 2022 when KU went 4-20 in Big 12 games.

Before commencing a home series vs. Texas, the Jayhawks will play the second Border War battle of the season. Kansas lost to Mizzou on March 15th by a score of 3-8, and they will face off again on May 2nd at 6:00 PM CT. The game can be watched on SEC Network.
