Kansas basketball learned good news from Texas high school commit Quentin Grimes. The 6-foot-5 guard is the new Texas Gatorade Player of the Year.

For the second straight season, the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year will play for Kansas Basketball. Marcus Garrett has distinguished himself for Hall of Fame coach Bill Self this season. On Thursday Jayhawk commit Quentin Grimes learned he is the 2018 honoree.  The Jayhawks are winning the recruiting battle and getting the top talent from the Lone Star State.

Grimes who played for College Park High in The Woodlands community of the Houston metro area certainly deserved all the attention.  As a matter of fact, Grimes is one of three Jayhawk commits named to the McDonalds All-America Team. Guard Devon Dotson from Charlotte, North Carolina joins Grimes on the McDonalds West Team. Six-foot-ten center David McCormack will face them on the McDonalds East team. All three will look fine in Crimson and Blue.

Considering how Garrett has played this season for the Jayhawks, getting another Texas Gatorade Player of the Year is fantastic.  The 6-foot-5 guard from Dallas started 7 and played in 32 games for the Jayhawks. He didn’t just play, he made a positive impact in those games including Thursday Big 12 tourney opener.

Garrett who earned start in the season opener is averaging almost 20 minutes a game because he is always around the basketball. He is improving on offense but is outstanding on defense.  He had 33 steals during the season and averaged almost 4 rebounds a game.

Grimes just wrapped up a high school career that saw him score over 2800 points, dish nearly 600 assists and hustle to over 850 rebounds.  He is the school record holder in all three stats. If Grimes plays defense even close to what Garret does, he will have head start on getting some playing time right away in Lawrence.
