Big 12 ignores record day by Jayhawk Kahlil Herbert

Kansas running back Kahlil Herbert should be celebrating honors for his big day against West Virginia. David Beaty and the Kansas football team have no reason to celebrate.

Did you see or read the good news on the Big 12 Player of the Week honors?  Jayhawk sophomore running back Kahlil Herbert only ran for almost 300 yards and two touchdowns. As a matter of fact, the best day by any FBS running back in the nation this season is not good enough for the Big 12. That’s right. Herbert’s incredible performance didn’t even get a pat on the back from the conference.

I expected at least a co-player of the week honor from the Big 12 but not this week. Does anyone at the Big 12 office remember Gale Sayers?  Herbert’s big day for Doug Meacham’s offense ran past the NFL Hall of Fame Kansas running back too.  On the other hand, Herbert’s performance is only the third best in Jayhawk history. That must be why the conference decided to give their weekly honor to someone else.

Herbert’s performance did not lead to a Kansas victory. Maybe that is why the conference overlooked his 8.1 average yards per carry. I didn’t know winning the game determined the weekly conference honors.  Jayhawk linebacker Joe Dineen earned defensive player of the week honors after the Jayhawk win over SEMO earlier this month.

The Kansas football team should not complain that the conference recognized another player for the weekly honor. David Beaty and the coaching staff have a lot of work to do. They need to focus on bigger things during their week off to prepare for the Texas Tech game. However, I still feel bad for Herbert. After rushing for 4,6, 137 and 291-yards in the first four games, he might run for even more against the Red Raiders.
