The Kansas football program honors former head coach Mark Mangino Saturday night.  An informal poll shows fans fully support the decision.

Saturday is a big day in many ways for Kansas football.  The 2017 season kicks off at 6p.m. with a game against Southeast Missouri State. The team is also going to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the amazing Orange Bowl team led by their coach Mark Mangino.

As a matter of fact, I never dreamed the University might bring back one of the biggest names in recent Jayhawk football history. I seriously doubt Mangino did either. I am very glad this is happening.  When news broke of coach Mangino’s return earlier this month, the social media world exploded and most of it was positive.

A day or two after things calmed down, ThroughthePhog conducted a very brief, unscientific poll among those on Twitter.  We asked Kansas football fans their thoughts on coach Mangino’s return to Memorial Stadium.  Did they think it was a good decision or too controversial?

By an overwhelming margin of 77 percent, those who participated believed it was a great decision.  The 6 percent who disliked the idea can go to the game in Riley County on Saturday. Like Mangino or not, the man knows how to coach football.

In addition, he knew how to hire pretty good assistant coaches too. A few people I spoke with following the announcement forgot David Beaty served as an assistant on Mangino’s staff.

As a matter of fact, the last time Mangino stopped in at Memorial Stadium, the Jayhawks won the game. They beat his Iowa State team in November 2014.  It may not matter but I am sure Kansas fans hope the trend continues.
