Although the Kanas football season is set to kick off Saturday, head coach David Beaty is not forgetting his native Texas and the families involved with Hurricane Harvey.

Yes, there is more to life than Saturday’s opening of the Kansas football season. Coach David Beaty is busy on this game week. On the other hand, the third-year Jayhawk football coach is also focused on his home state and the families of the student athletes on the team from Texas.

During a media briefing Tuesday, Beaty admitted he is monitoring the news on storm damage in Houston. As a matter of fact, there are 32 student athletes from Texas on the current Kansas football roster. In addition, ten list Houston as home.

It is important to realize, the burden of attending class, preparing for a football game and also worrying about your family. The past two days, Beaty took action to help his players and their families in Texas.

"I’ve actually talked with every one of our student athlete’s parents"

All of the families were safe but had relatives forced from their homes due to the storm. Beaty and his staff  are doing what they can to help support them. In like manner, the Kansas Athletic Department, according to Beaty is doing everything possible to support the effort to help those in the flooding. “Our athletic department is huge on that,” he said. “For the moment, were all accounted down there.”

Despite the storm, Beaty learned the families simply were anxious to get to Lawrence for Saturday’s game. “It’s really cool that they have something to look forward to,” he said.  There is more to life than football. At the same time, I am glad football will provide something positive for Jayhawk fans from Texas this weekend.
