The Kansas football season opens Saturday. On Monday night, coach David Beaty finally released a depth chart.

Kansas football fans have waited for weeks and months. Finally we have a football game and a team depth chart to review.  Coach David Beaty released the chart on the university athletic site Monday night.  It contains few surprises but is interesting reading.

I looked at quarterback first. Both transfer star Peyton Bender and Carter Stanley are listed. During the Big 12 weekly teleconference Monday, coach Beaty hinted he knew who would start. I think he needs to do more than hint. It might be helpful to tell the team.

As a matter of fact, it might be nice if the team, Bender or Stanley knew who is going to start at quarterback Saturday.  On the other hand, Beaty is doing what he thinks best. For confidence sake, I think he needs to just name a starter now!.  Saturday’s game is against Southeast Missouri State not Oklahoma.

The chart also includes Kahlil Herbert and Taylor Martin as the starting running backs. No surprise there although I do expect freshman Dom Williams to see action Saturday. Beaty specifically referenced Williams during a post scrimmage media briefing a few days ago.

I thought the most notable new name on defense is redshirt freshman Dru Prox at linebacker behind starter Joe Dineen, Jr. I hope he’s ready for primetime action. The defense needs all the help it can get.

On special teams, Beaty will rely on freshman kicker Liam Jones. Jones is on scholarship and fans expect big things from his left foot.  Steven Sims will handle the first team kickoff and punt return duties.  I am also glad to see Alabama transfer Wide Receiver Dylon Charlot included among backups to return kicks.
