Kansas football fans who also follow the Royals had fun Friday night. Jayhawk defensive end Dorance Armstrong threw a successful first pitch.

Kansas football fans enjoyed seeing the preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year at Kaufmann Stadium Friday night. Armstrong and many of his Jayhawk teammates got away from David Beaty’s summer preseason camp for the evening. They attended the University of Kansas night at the K.  The 6-foot 4-inch 250-pound Armstrong threw out the first pitch high but just fine.

In addition to Armstrong’s first pitch success, he and the players kept busy signing autographs. It is great to see the Jayhawk football team working together, promoting the upcoming season and having a little fun too. August is a busy month for these student athletes. They need to get out and show the crimson and blue across the region.

Prior to throwing out the first pitch, Armstrong impressed me during a brief, live television interview. Joel Goldberg and Jeff Montgomery had fun talking to Armstrong who admitted he played a little baseball back in his home state of Texas. It sounds like Armstrong played very little baseball but at a variety of positions. He explained how he has also worked to become a more vocal leader.

David Beaty and the Jayhawks need Armstrong to use his speed, quickness and vocal leadership to get the season off to a strong start. Armstrong’s preseason honors are wonderful for a Jayhawk team looking for positives. The joy of the summer recognition will fade quickly if Armstrong and the Jayhawks can’t live up to the hype. I think they will.
