Kansas football fans are organizing schedules, checking ticket requests and excited about the upcoming season. There are some big games on the horizon.

Most diehard college football fans started peeking at Street and Smith’s, Athlon and the other annual preview yearbooks in June. I read them all too. Now just days before the Kansas football season opener, I took a closer look at Lindy’s Sports College Football periodical. It bills itself as America’s leading football authority.  Street and Smith’s uses a similar banner.

David Beaty’s Jayhawks get little credit in Lindy’s section on Big 12 football. On recruiting, Brian Perroni admits the Jayhawks filled needs despite the lowest-rated class in the conference. He does include a mention of talented freshman running back Dom Williams.  Beaty praised Williams after last week’s scrimmage.

The magazine includes a section on the Big 12’s biggest games this season. They highlight two, three or more games every week of the season. As a matter of fact, you won’t find one mention of Kansas football here.  On the other hand, maybe the Jayhawks do not deserve a mention.

Kansas football fans know the team has several games worthy of “The Big Ones” section. The season opener is huge. However, if the Jayhawks don’t win against lowly Southeast Missouri State, the rest of the season may not matter. The following week is actually more important.

I think week two against Central Michigan is the most critical game of the season. This Jayhawk team needs to make a big improvement from what we hope to see in week one. In addition, Lindy’s needed to include West Virginia’s September 23 trip to Memorial Stadium. That Big 12 opener will tell a lot about both teams and could be the springboard to a bowl game for the Jayhawks. Yes, I’m very optimistic about this team.
