Longtime Kansas football fans know the rich tradition of Jayhawk football. They don’t appreciate the jokes about football program.

Anyone who really knows Kansas football understands and appreciates the history, great names and tradition of the Jayhawk football program. Despite that, the Jayhawk football program is occasionally ridiculed. It is the butt of jokes. A rather obscure sports web site made fun of the football program on twitter Monday.  I know fans didn’t like it. Many responded appropriately to support the program.

The Jayhawks last attended and won a bowl game in January 2008. Yes, it’s been that long. On the other hand, there are other football programs with a more significant bowl drought.  As a matter of fact, when the Jayhawks get a bowl invite they usually bring home a victory.

Since 1992, the Jayhawks have been invited to six bowl games. They won five of those contests including wins over BYU, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Minnesota.  Nobody is making fun of those programs and nobody should make fun of the Kansas football program.

With last season’s win over Texas, nobody should make fun of the Jayhawks. The 2017 team includes the preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Dorance Armstrong. He is already mentioned as a first-round NFL draft pick. Nothing to joke about there.

Sports success goes through cycles. Just ask the Royals. Critics only look at wins and losses. I believe Kansas football under David Beaty is ready to make a significant step forward in 2017. I am not predicting a bowl game invitation but enough success to shut up some of the social media critics.
