Gary Woodland makes University of Kansas fans proud. The former member of the Jayhawk golf team is back in the sports headlines again this week.

One week ago, former University of Kansas golfer Gary Woodland sat in a great position at The Open Golf championship- the tour’s third major of the year.  He sat in sixth place at Royal Birkdale tied with Rory Mcilrory, just back of leader and eventual winner Jordan Spieth.

Seven bogeys on Saturday left Woodland out of the chase for victory.  Despite finishing 70th, he made four birds on the back nine. Above all, that strong finish led to an outstanding tourney this week. He is hottest golfer going at the Canadian Open.

In the opening round Thursday, Woodland carded an eagle and three birdies for a 2-under 70.  That was tame compared to his round on Friday.  As a matter of fact, Woodland played one of his best round ever on the PGA tour. His round of the day included 5 birdies in the final 6 holes for a 9-under 63.  As a matter of fact, the round moved him into second place at 11-under par.

Kansas fans hope Woodland has a better weekend than he did at Royal Birkdale. I prefer playing golf instead of sitting and watching. On the other hand, if I know Woodland is on the course, I always try to see what he’s up to. When there is no Kansas basketball to watch, Jayhawks can count on Gary Woodland to make us smile.
