Sheahon Zenger contract extension at KU good for 1 reason
By Stan Unruh
Kansas Jayhawk fans received some positive holiday weekend news. Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger is going to be in Lawrence a few more years.
Like him or not, agree with his decisions or not- Dr. Sheahon Zenger is the right man at this time to lead the University of Kansas Athletics Department.
The University made the announcement Sunday that that Zenger had a contract extension through 2021. Zenger is a Kansas native and has a history in Lawrence that are perfect for the job.
I know he’s made some decisions that are not popular. That is part of the job.
I must admit, I originally thought hiring Charlie Weis as head football coach was a stroke of genius. A few months later, the on-field results nearly caused me to suffer a stroke.
With the Kansas Board of Regents naming Dr. Doug Girod the new University Chancellor last week, there was some discussion about Zenger’s future? Would he stay? Would he be allowed to stay? Should the new Chancellor bring in someone else?

I think the contract extension sends a strong message. Zenger is not perfect. However, he is doing a good job managing the day to day operations. As a matter of fact, he is doing the most important thing on his daily to do list.
That item is to keep Kansas basketball coach Bill Self happy. According to Matt Tait at KUSport.com, Self is pleased with Zenger.
That’s worth Zenger’s salary increase and the extension.
So, relax and know that Bill Self speaks for all the other KU coaches. Self has enough to think about.
When Bill is happy- we all need to be happy.
