In less than 100 days, Kansas football opens the regular season. We know their schedule is tough and it’s supposed to be tough.

Kansas football fans would be thrilled if David Beaty got the team back to a bowl game. Most are not looking beyond a couple of non-conference wins or wins period.

It’s too early for me to start predicting how many wins.

However, what if the 2017 Kansas team should amazingly surprise everyone? If that would happen, the team’s strength of schedule is not outstanding, especially the non-conference schedule.

In the first place, strength of schedule is now the key to big-time success in college football.

Even with a Big 12 Athletic Director- Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt the chair of the college football playoff committee, only 4 teams are going to be selected to play for the national title.

As a matter of face, the Big 12 has not had a lot of success making the final four.

Kansas football is not worried about doing that, just yet. David Beaty and staff simply wants to win as many games as possible and hope for a bowl game invite.

In the future, provided the Jayhawks want to dream about reaching the final four in football, the team will need to forget playing team’s like Southeast Missouri State – the 2017 season opener.

On the other hand, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State must develop the best resumes to impress the selection committee.

Tom Fornelli on CBS.com has taken a closer look at the 2017 strength of schedule for each Big 12 football team.

Fornelli considers where games are played and, for example, if a team is coming off a bye week.

I was surprised at what he determined about Kansas football and the rest of the conference.

Obviously, the round-robin schedule has an impact.

Kansas also plays Iowa State in Ames this year.
