Reasons 25-1 it’s Great to be a Jayhawk

25. You traveled to Malibu in 2003 to cover the KU volleyball team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance for the University Daily Kansan. Wait, that was me.

24. You’re not a Mizzou fan.

23. Because if you were, you may have been a part of this disaster.

22. The late Dean Smith, a great basketball coach, activist and human being, was proud to be a Jayhawk.

21. KU  has produced such a long line of who’s who in college basketball coaching, seven arenas around the nation are named after Jayhawk alumni.

20. Jim Ryun, the first high school male to break the four-minute mile, ran for the Jayhawk track team.

19. The men aren’t the only ballers in Lawrence. Former women’s basketball player Lynette Woodard was the first female member of the Harlem Globetrotters, and won a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics as a member of the U.S. women’s basketball team.

18. Former Jayhawk running back John Riggins is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and former Jayhawk QB John Hadl is considered by some as one of the best quarterbacks not in the HOF.

17. You know that if you can’t make it to a Jayhawk basketball game, you can always find them on TV — that is unless you live in the actual town they play basketball in and chose the wrong cable provider.

16. ESPN reporter Holly Rowe loves your team.

15. No Big 12 basketball team has swept the Jayhawks in the regular season since Self came on board in 2003.

14. Thon Maker is interested in playing for KU. I repeat, Thon Maker is interested in playing for KU.

13. The streak of finishing last in the Big 12 football race ended last year. Congrats Iowa St., you are now officially the worst team in the conference.

12. You have, as Dick Vitale says, the best chant in college basketball. Rock Chalk!

11. President Barack Obama put your team in the spotlight by picking them not once, but twice, to win the men’s basketball national championship (we won’t discuss what happened either time).

10. Five things you never have to worry about as a Jayhawk fan include: Storming the court

7. Finding a head coach (unless it’s football, then yes, you do have to worry about that)

6. Getting pumped up before a home game

5. The Jayhawks could struggle for 25 straight years, and still be considered one of the top 3 programs of all time.

4. Did I mention the dude who invented the game of basketball coached at Kansas?

3. Roy Williams, whose idea of a cuss word is “dad-gum” actually cussed on national television once and said he didn’t “give a s%#t about North Carolina.

Although, later we found out he did in fact actually give a s#%t abut North Carolina.
