Where does Kansas sit in ranked wins since 2020 (it's not what you might expect)?

Kansas has had some rough years recently, but things aren't as bleak as they may seem. Kansas is still one of the best teams against the toughest competition.

It's no secret that Kansas basketball hasn't quite lived up to its lofty standards over the last several years. Since winning the national championship in 2022, the vibe around the Jayhawks just isn't what it used to be.

Let's not sugarcoat things either. Kansas fans are among some of the most spoiled fans in the country. Kansas is a true blueblood program that has left its mark indirectly on other top-tier programs like Kentucky and North Carolina. Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith both played at Kansas, and Roy Williams left his mark at both KU and UNC.

The last 40 years have seen Kansas vault into the absolute elite of college basketball, with three national championships and 10 Final Fours. KU hasn't missed an NCAA Tournament since 1989. The Jayhawks have 24 Big 12 regular season titles and 11 tournament championships. So, yes, fans are spoiled.

Since winning their title in 2022, KU has 95 games in four years, against 28 losses. That is still pretty good. The most glaring issue over the last several years is that since the 2022 run, the Jayhawks have not made it past the first weekend of March Madness.

There are reasons for that. Head coach Bill Self has adjusted slowly to the NIL Era and how to navigate the transfer portal. He seems to be figuring it out. That has caused the talent level over the past four seasons to be less than it was before 2022. Transfers haven't worked out, and injuries have derailed seasons.

Surprisingly, Kansas ranks first in ranked wins since 2020

All of this makes the fact that Kansas leads all schools in ranked wins since 2020, according to College Basketball Report, almost shocking.

As bad as things have seemed of late, Kansas is still the best school in college basketball at winning big games. A massive part of that is that Bill Self still knows what he is doing on the sidelines. He is still capable of getting his teams prepared for big games against the best competition.

It also means that KU has had just enough talent over these lean years to win their fair share of these big games, though at times it certainly doesn't look like it. Despite perceptions, Kansas is still a national powerhouse, even if the Jayhawks haven't performed well in the NCAA Tournament lately.

Self hopes to turn things around this season. He has one of the top incoming recruiting classes in the country. 247Sports has Kansas ranked third. Tyran Stokes and Tylen Kinney lead a deep class of seven freshmen. While the transfer class isn't as hyped, Self has added players who will fit his system and provide veteran leadership to an otherwise young team.

KU has another strong slate of games lined up this season too. Kentucky and UConn headline the non-conference schedule, and there is a good chance KU plays some more ranked teams in the Players Era Festival. Of course, the Big 12 will provide plenty more games against ranked opponents for Kansas to add to the sport-leading 39 ranked wins since 2020.

While fans haven't been happy about the last four KU seasons, almost every other school would take the successes the Jayhawks have experienced since 2020 and be thrilled. But Kansas has higher expectations than most, and hopefully, KU will return to national prominence this season.
