Tyran Stokes is the second consecutive number one prospect Kansas basketball head coach Bill Self successfully recruited to KU. A year ago, everyone was excited to see Darryn Peterson in the crimson and blue, and Friday night, Stokes will play for the first time in a KU uniform as the Jayhawks play Pittsburgh State in an exhibition.
Things didn't go well with Peterson at Kansas. He struggled with leg injuries on and off for most of the season. He missed numerous games, and in others he pulled himself off the floor. His periodical absences made it difficult for his teammates to gain much chemistry with him when he did play. This resulted in a fourth straight early dismissal from the NCAA Tournament. It wasn't what anyone expected.
After a long, drawn-out recruiting process, Stokes eventually announced he was attending KU. This year, fans may be wary of getting too excited about another super freshman. That would be a mistake. While Stokes probably isn't the pure scorer that Peterson was (is), he might be the better all around player. He won't score as effortlessly as Peterson did at times, but Stokes might be a better team player and leader. Baring something unforeseen, Stokes might be a help to team chemistry, rather than a detriment.
Stokes' attitude seems to be centered around team success, that when his teammates do well, everyone wins. That is the mindset of a leader.

Don't judge Tyran Stokes by what happened with Darryn Peterson last year
During a press conference earlier this week, Self mentioned how coachable Stokes is, according to Field of 68 writer Sam Lance.
Asked Bill Self about some of the character concerns surrounding Tyran Stokes and if the five-star’s misunderstood in that regard. He gave a very thoughtful answer.

This seems to be another positive for Stokes that maybe Peterson didn't share. Much about last season is unknown, so this is purely speculation. Self clearly likes coaching Stokes, something that was never apparent last year with Peterson.
Stokes seems willing to do what is necessary for the team to win. Lance shared the questions posed to Stokes and his answers. Some of the key things that were of note are how he is trying to be a better leader and how much he loves passing and getting his teammates involved (another big departure from Peterson's game). If he is the leader that Self appears to think Stokes can be, this team will be very good.

He also mentioned that the speed of the college game is much faster but that he is preparing himself for that adjustment. Lastly, he talks about Self, giving some great insight as to why the latter is a Hall of Fame coach.
“He's been coaching for a very long time and gotten a lot of players to where they want to be. A lot of players come back and tell us how crazy of a coach he was, but it's all for the better. He just wants everyone to be great. Everyone loves him. So him being a people person and being able to go in coach's office after practice, going up there and telling him the real, it's like what you want to hear. And it's great because having a relationship with your head coach like that is very important.”

It is easy to see how much Stokes respects Self and maybe that's why Stokes is so coachable. Combine that with the desire to be better, and it gives hope that this could be a special season for Self, Strokes, and the Jayhawks.
