The collegiate basketball world is currently feeling the wrath of the NCAA Transfer Portal. Multiple teams (Kansas notwithstanding) are frantically reshaping their rosters every day.
While Bill Self and the Jayhawks are a bit slower at bringing in players via the portal than most other programs right now, the eyes of Lawrence, Kan, seem to be fixated on one player who does not fit the mold of a transfer prospect but rather a gem from the high school ranks, Tyran Stokes.
Stokes is currently touted as the nation’s best high school prospect according to 247Sports, and has long been a target for Self and the Kansas program. Connections with Kansas assistant coach Kurtis Townsend give the Jayhawks a strong ground to get their footing under, as Townsend once recruited Stokes’ high school coach, Jamal Crawford, to the Michigan Wolverines.
Combine that with current five-star Kansas commit, Taylen Kinney, previously openly admitting to trying to bring Stokes to the Jayhawks, and you can get a gauge of just how special Stokes is.
"Right when I said I was going, I put that call in. I ain’t going to say his name, but he going to announce,” said Kinney of previous commit Davion Adkins, before relaying “And then trying to get Tyran."
Stokes is hopefully getting closer to his commitment date
Yesterday, Stokes reposted an old graphic on his Instagram story, relaying that his final few schools are Oregon, Kentucky, and Kansas.
This post refutes a previous report from ZagsBlog, which has suggested that both Washington and Gonzaga had seriously entered the race.
To follow that up, minutes ago, Stokes replied to a post on X asking when he is set to commit.

When you look at the top 50 recruits according to 247Sports, only Stokes, Dylan Mingo, and Quincy Wadley are not at least registered as “Hard commits” to their next stops, and Mingo was set to join UNC if not for the firing of former head coach Hubert Davis, who was then replaced by Michael Malone, which led to Mingo decommitting.
This goes to show that Stokes’ recruiting trail has been anything but orthodox, but for the Jayhawks, the Ducks, and the Wildcats, he would instantly be the No. 1 outlet.
Kansas’ roster currently comprises guards Kohl Rosario and Leroy Blyden Jr, along with forward Keanu Dawes. Kinney, Adkins, Trent Perry, and Luke Barnett will all be joining the ranks as freshmen next season. If someone of the caliber of Stokes is added, Kansas’ entire outlook on next season is changed.
