Twitter reacts to Kansas football fan turnout at Arrowhead Stadium against Houston
Kansas football finally won its first conference and FBS game of the season with a 42-14 victory over Houston on Saturday. The Jayhawks' offense was hot and the defense forced four interceptions. However, many people weren't pleased with how many fans showed up to the contest.
As David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium continues to undergo renovations for its $448 million project, Kansas decided before the season it would play its conference home games at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. Against the Cougars, the official attendance number was listed at 38,619, approximately half of Arrowhead's capacity. However, this overhead picture right before kickoff makes it look much worse:
Kansas football fan attendance was underwhelming vs. Houston
Most of the upper bowl appears all but empty. It is certainly a disappointing look for a team that had several home sellouts with nearly 50,000 Jayhawk supporters in the stands a year ago. Then again, the hype around Kansas football has diminished significantly over the past month due to the team's struggles, and Arrowhead's proximity makes it difficult to get to.
Regardless, that didn't stop opposing fans from throwing shade toward KU's way on social media. Commenters on X (formerly Twitter) were calling for more fans to show up to the game, especially for a homecoming contest. We can't disagree there when the stadium was half empty (or half full, depending on how you'd like to view it).
Some comments write: "That’s what happens when you play games outside of your state," "Thats a pretty dissapointing turnout. No way thats 20K, which means Late night may have had a better crowd," and "Looks like an absolutely electric atmosphere." Others poked more fun at KU, pushing the (albeit wrong) taxpayer money narrative that has been debunked time and time again: "Yall need to just go play at a high school forreal this is a waste of taxpayer resources."
Thankfully, there are still two more games for Kansas football fans to attend at Arrowhead. Perhaps the turnout will be more positive when they take on undefeated Iowa State or Coach Prime and Colorado.
