What Kansas has been able to do over the last two and a half years regarding their massive football renovation project. Renovation may not even be the right word. Since the end of the 2023 season, the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium has been rebuilt, rather than just updating and fixing the rundown facility.
For the six home games this season, the stadium will see a drastic drop in the seating capacity. Kansas can only fit 32,000 spectators this year, down from 37,000 last season. In 2024, the Kansas football team played some of its home games at Children's Mercy Park at the Legends in Kansas City and others at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Jayhawks were able to return to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium with the west side mostly completed, as well as the north bowl. After the 2025, the east side was demolished and hasn't been fully finished. The stadium is still an active work site, but the lower bowl seating area is complete. Work will begin on the upper bowl after the season.
After the last stage of construction on the stadium is finished, which should be next August, according to KCUR, capacity will rise to 43,000 fans.
Kansas football should be filling the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium every home game
It's imperative for fans to support the Jayhawks by filling the Booth every home game. The university is already suffering from lost revenue due to the significantly diminished seating capacity. That 5,000 in possible fans will dent the budget, not only in ticket sales but also with lost concessions and merchandise sales.
This week's game should be a festive atmosphere at the Booth. The first game of the season is always a time of hope, and LIU shouldn't put much of a damper on the optimism. Next week, however, the schedule stiffens when the loathed Missouri Tigers visit to renew the Border War.
Kansas fans should pack the Booth easily for these two games and create a raucous atmosphere that will fire up the Jayhawks and cause communication issues for the opponents.
Other games on the home schedule include Middle Tennessee on October 3, Baylor on October 24, UCF on November 7, and finally, BYU on November 21. Those games will provide plenty of excitement for fans as they support the Jayhawks.
Next season, the Booth should be finished and at full capacity, which will be 11,000 more than this season. The new design of the stadium is fantastic, and it will be exciting for fans to attend games this year and well into the future.
Fans seated on the east side will have to deal with an active construction site, with temporary restrooms and concession stands.
Even when the stadium is finished, the overall project surrounding the stadium will have at least another year to go before it's completed. Once the stadium is finished, work will begin on a hotel, retail area, and parking.
The Booth and the area surrounding the stadium will be beautiful and amazing when the entire project is finished. Players and fans have all been patient while this project has moved along, but it will be worth the inconveniences once finished.
