After making the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in the 21st century, the Kansas women's basketball team opened the Big Dance with a thrilling overtime win over Michigan. A nine-point fourth-quarter comeback propelled the Jayhawks to a huge opening-game victory.
While KU started the tournament on a high note, things will not get easier when they take on the top-seeded USC Trojans tonight in the Round of 32. Brandon Schneider and his group will need to put on their best possible display to come out of the first weekend unscathed.
USC won the Pac-12 Tournament and defeated No. 16 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in round one. They are coached by Lindsay Gottlieb and led by true freshman JuJu Watkins, who was an AP All-American in her first season. She is averaging 26.9 points and 7.1 rebounds on the season and is one of the best players in the country.
Fellow freshman phenom S'Mya Nichols leads the No. 8 seeded Jayhawks in scoring, averaging 15.2 points and 2.8 assists so far in her first year in Lawrence. Dominant defensive center Taiyanna Jackson, who holds the all-time program record for total blocks, is also a key player for KU.
In Saturday's win over Michigan, guard Zakiyah Franklin scored a game-high 22 points with five rebounds and four assists. Nichols and Wyvette Mayberry also poured in 15 points.
