A new year always brings excitement and unknowns each year. This year, I moved my son into KU dorms and witnessed the usual KU buzz. You had dads doing dad things, putting together Ikea classics in hallways, and moms trying to control where things go in their kids' rooms. This isn't the time to control what happens. The next four years will help shape their future, and you trust what you have taught and what they have learned along the way will help carry them to those next stages of life. The future is bright, and you control what your next steps look like.

This year looks to have the feel of something KU has not had since 2008 when the basketball team won a National Championship and the football team won the Orange Bowl. Faces change, but expectations don't.

A phrase we have heard over the years in regards to KU basketball that has always rang true is that we expect a Big 12 championship and to compete for a national title every year. With a loaded roster and most likely preseason No. 1 ranking, the hoops squad is lined up to do what we tend to do — win the Big 12 and be a top Seed in the NCAA Tournament with our sights set on another banner.

This year, the buzz is also with our football program. Head coach Lance Leipold has proven to be the leader that we have been waiting for. After going to the game on Thursday, you could feel the energy in the crowd that the program and the Jayhawks are not only on the rise but a threat to win the Big 12 this year.

The Year of the Jayhawk is here. We must remember that with everything, there will be highs, and there will be lows. Let's enjoy the ride and cheer our Jayhawks into another epic Jayhawk year.
