The No. 8 seeded Kansas Jayhawks and No. 9 seeded Michigan Wolverines women's basketball teams will meet today in a first-round matchup of the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan is coached by Kim Barnes, who has been at the helm for over a decade in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines are 9-6 in the NCAA Tournament under Barnes and have won at least one game in each of the six tournaments she has appeared in. Meanwhile, Kansas has only reached one tournament prior to this year under coach Brandon Schneider, who is 1-1 in March Madness.

Kansas is entering the game as betting favorites, though the two schools are relatively even statistically. U of M shoots 43.2% from the field (35.3% from three) on the season, while KU sits at 44.1% (32.8% from three). Michigan slightly outpaces Kansas in the scoring department (69.9 to 68.2), and they allow the same amount of points per game (63.7).

Laila Phelia leads the Wolverines in scoring, averaging 16.8 points per game on 42.3% shooting. U of M runs a small lineup with none of its contributors standing above 6-foot-3. It will be difficult for them to contain Taiyanna Jackson, KU's defensive stalwart who averages 3.1 blocks per contest and is the all-time blocks leader in school history. Fans should also keep an eye out for S'Mya Nichols, the Jayhawks' freshman phenom who led the team in scoring.
