The Kansas football season is less than a month away, and the Jayhawks are anticipating one of the most successful campaigns in program history. KU has one of the most talented rosters in the Big 12, which has led to multiple players receiving recognition on an individual scale.
After finishing ninth in the nation in rushing offense last year, Jayhawk fans across the state of Kansas are excited to watch the offense run rampantly on opposing defenses. That’s why it should come as no surprise that running backs Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Jr. were two of the 87 players listed to the 2024 Doak Walker Award watchlist.

According to the NCAA, the Doak Walker Award is: "presented to the nation's premier running back” each season. The committee found both Neal and Hishaw eligible to fit this criteria, which is why it is such an impressive feat for the duo to receive this recognition in consecutive seasons.
Neal has a legitimate chance to win the award in 2024. He rushed for 1,280 yards and 16 touchdowns a year ago and only needs 765 yards in his senior season to surpass the program's all-time rushing record. The Lawrence native is widely considered one of the best tailbacks in the country.
Meanwhile, Hishaw has struggled with injuries after missing more than half of the 2022 season. He also has dealt with ball security issues in the past, fumbling on several occasions last season. The redshirt junior must be more consistent if he is going to live up to his full potential once Neal graduates.
This is a high honor for both running backs. While they might not take home the award at the end of the season, Neal will likely be named a semifinalist if he continues his successful path.
