Kansas basketball greats set to return to Lawrence for 16th annual Rock Chalk Roundball Classic
By Dillon Davis
The 16th annual Rock Chalk Roundball Classic returns to Lawrence this week, and along with it, a bevy of former Kansas basketball stars.
KU greats Devonte Graham, Sherron Collins and members of the 2022 national championship team – including Ochai Agbaji, Jalen Wilson, Christian Braun, Mitch Lightfoot and David McCormack – are all returning to Lawrence Free State High School to take part in a scrimmage along with several other former Jayhawks.
2008 Orange Bowl MVP Aqib Talib will also be in attendance along with teammate Brandon McAnderson.
The Roundball Classic is the first of a weekend full of charity events established to help raise money for a select group of local children battling cancer, nicknamed the Magnificent Seven.
Each year, the Roundball Classic team selects families in need of support during their difficult times. The proceeds from the scrimmage and the weekend’s events all go to the families to help ease the cost of their various medical bills.
The event was established by current “Voice of the Jayhawks” Brian Hanni back in 2009 as a benefit for the family of Brandon White, a Lawrence youth pastor who had lost his life to cancer. The event has helped more than 40 families and raised more than $1 million since its inception.
The Roundball Classic is a great opportunity to see some former Kansas basketball favorites and help raise money for a good cause. Many of the players stick around after the game to sign autographs for fans as well.
Tickets for this event can be purchased in person at one of the following locations.
Lawrence: 23rd Street Brewery
Topeka: Johnny’s Tavern
Lenexa: Jefferson’s
Olathe: Johnny’s Tavern (K-10 and Ridgeview)
Prairie Village: Johnny’s Tavern at Corinth Square
In addition to the scrimmage, there is also a gala dinner on Friday night and the Rock Chalk Roundbowl on Saturday where fans can get more one-on-one time with their favorite Jayhawks. Tickets for those events can be found on the Roundball Classic website.
