Nobody thought that the 2024-25 Kansas basketball roster was set — that is, until head coach Bill Self worked his magic in the transfer portal yet again. The Jayhawks added incoming senior and former Northern Illinois guard David Coit to the squad, filling the 13th spot on the roster and making KU a clear national title favorite.

After committing last week, Coit put pen to paper on Monday by signing his financial aid agreement for the upcoming campaign. Kansas Athletics confirmed this on its website, and Coach Self released a statement expressing how excited he is to have his new player on the team.

Here is what he had to say about the addition of Coit:

"David can shoot; he has range. He's a player who can score the basketball. He averaged 21 points this past year at Northern Illinois. I see him as a guy that gives us a whole different dimension that we may not have had he not signed with us."

While Coit played on a subpar NIU team, make no mistake — he can play at an extremely high level. The New Jersey native averaged 20.8 points per contest in 2023-24, adding 3.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds. As Self mentioned in his statement, he is also a prolific 3-point shooter, averaging 9.6 attempts from beyond the arc per game while sinking them at a 33.7% clip.

This move is especially important following the loss of Elmarko Jackson, a promising sophomore who suffered a season-ending injury this past June. Coit and Mississippi State transfer Shakeel Moore are expected to compete for backup guard minutes, but Coit has a much more diverse offensive skill set.

It remains to be seen how Self will use Coit behind started Dajuan Harris. However, having him on the roster adds another element of depth that drastically improves an already stacked Kansas basketball roster.
