3 things the Kansas Jayhawks must address offensively before UNLV game

The Kansas football team is coming off a disastrous loss to Illinois and have a lot of work to do, especially on offense. Several things must be addressed before playing UNLV.

No. 3: Get the experienced wide receivers open in space

Through two games, the passing game seems uninspired at best. Other than Lucas Grimm, the wide receivers haven't seemed that involved in the gameplan. Grimm had nine catches against the Illini for a measly 40 yards, while Quentin Skinner and Lawrence Arnold had 86 yards on seven catches.

It seems that on a lot of the plays, Arnold and/or Skinner were merely running the playground standard route known as "go deep." It wasn't effective. Why were they unable to get open in space very often? Was it the scheme, the game plan, their route running, the quarterback not seeing them, or the play-calling? Whatever it was, it wasn't working.

Like the running backs, these receivers are talented and experienced. There should be plays in the playbook that will get at least one of them open in space. The coaching staff needs to find the right combination to get these guys going.

Daniels is a good ball-handler and the running backs are terrific, so maybe a few more play action plays might work. Fewer wide receiver screens might help, especially when in the two-minute offense deep in the opponent's end of the field. The coaching staff needs to help more to help these players succeed.

Whatever caused the malaise that was the Illinois game, the coaching staff needs to get the Jayhawks turned around and quick. UNLV is coming to town, and they will not go down easily. The Kansas football game needs to be at their very best to get back on track.
