The up-and-down fiasco that was the 2023-24 Kansas basketball season concluded yesterday after Gonzaga steamrolled the Jayhawks in the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament. It is now the time for coaches and fans to explore the transfer portal to search for potential additions to next year's roster.

While bolstering the roster is an essential component of each school's offseason, player retention is overlooked in today's NCAA. The art of developing young student-athletes into stars still exists despite the portal's newfound prevalence. It is not a coincidence that the teams that make deep March Madness runs are typically experienced and return several players from the previous season.

Kevin McCullar, Nick Timberlake, and Parker Braun are the only Jayhawks who are definitely not returning to KU next year, as they all ran out of eligibility. Dajuan Harris is the only player who confirmed he will be back in a KU uniform next year. Besides those four, it remains unknown which players will stay in Lawrence, enter the transfer portal, or depart for the NBA.

Head coach Bill Self attacked the transfer portal head-on last offseason. Some of his additions worked out, while others did not. Jayhawk supporters should expect him to do the same this year, but perhaps it would be best if Kansas did not have to reconstruct its entire roster again.

Not every KU basketball player will be back in 2024-25, but the coaching staff needs to do everything in its power to make sure these three players do not slip away this offseason.
