Kansas basketball gets its first game against a top-notch opponent of the season when it clashes with Kentucky in the Champions Classic. This game features the two winningest programs in college basketball history.

The Jayhawks ripped through their first two regular-season games, outscoring Fordham and Middle Tennessee by an average score of 92-55. Head coach Bill Self played all his available players in both games as he looks to settle into a rotation going into the Kentucky game.

While an early loss to a school like Kentucky wouldn't hurt Kansas much in the long run, when a matchup like this pops up on the schedule, it means maybe a little more. Bragging rights between bluebloods can still be a big deal.

Phoggy Notes going into the Kansas vs. Kentucky Champions Classic matchup

- Kansas and Kentucky have played 36 times over the years. The Wildcats hold an impressive edge in these head-to-head battles, winning 24 of them; however, the Jayhawks have won six of the last eight matchups between these two titans.

- This is the 16th year Kansas has participated in the Champions Classic, compiling an impressive 9-6 record overall, going 3-2 against Kentucky, Duke, and Michigan State. The Jayhawks are tied with Duke for the best overall record in the annual event.

- The Jayhawks have shot 52 free throws through two games. Unfortunately, they've made just 28 of those attempts for a mere 53.8%. KU cannot hope to win close games against top-tier competition with a free-throw percentage like that, and hopefully it is something Kansas can fix quickly.

- In the first two games, 14 of KU's 15 players have scored at least one point. Only Atticus Richmond has been scoreless, and he's also played the fewest minutes, with only five.

KEY CONTENT: LUKE BARNETT COULD BE THE ANSWER TO KU'S THREE-POINT WOES

- Freshman Luke Barnett fired up the crowd late in the blowout against Middle Tennessee when he knocked down a trio of three-point shots in quick succession. He missed the fourth deep attempt, but KU needs a dependable sharpshooter from behind the arc, and maybe Barnett can fill that role going forward.

- The Jayhawks dominated the boards during their first two games against mid-major schools. Kansas out-rebounded the competition, 91-68, but will need everyone to hit the boards hard in the upcoming game against Kentucky and beyond. Dennis Parker Jr. had the most surprising rebounding total against the Blue Raiders with 7.
