The Kansas football team is looking for weapons on offense, and it may have one in wide receiver Nik McMillan. The transfer from Buffalo is respected enough that he made the 2026 Biletnikoff Award preseason watchlist.

The Biltetnikoff Award is presented each season to the nation's most outstanding pass catcher, regardless of position, according to their website. Only 44 players nationwide made the preseason watchlist.

McMillan had a fantastic season last year for Buffalo, catching 62 passes for 981 yards and three touchdowns. His 15.8 yards per catch was in line with his career mark of 15.5 yards. His ability to stretch defenses should be a huge weapon for the Jayhawks, no matter who might be throwing him the ball.

How can Nik McMillan help the Kansas football offense in 2026?

McMillan will join returning receivers redshirt senior Cam Pickett, sophomore Tate Nagy, and redshirt junior Keaton Kubecka, in addition to several other youthful pass catchers. . Pickett produced 454 catches for 476 yards and two touchdowns last season, averaging 10.6 yards per catch.

Kubecka pulled in 17 passes for 157 yards and one score, averaging 9.2 yards per reception. Nagy had 16 receptions for 116 yards as a true freshman, averaging 6.8 yards per catch.

KU added another transfer, redshirt senior Nazhae Cox, who hauled in 40 balls last season for Middle Tennessee State, good for 473 yards and five touchdowns. He averaged 11.8 yards per grab.

McMillan was by far the most productive of all these receivers last year. It is his 15.8 yards per catch, however, that shows where his biggest value is for Kansas. He should be the premier target down the field in the Jayhawks' offense, regardless of who is under center.

Cole Ballard, Isaiah Marshall, and Chase Jenkins are locked in a battle to see if one can emerge and take over as KU's primary quarterback. Whoever comes out on top will need a receiver who can stretch defenses and loosen up coverages underneath for possession receivers like Pickett and Nagy.

That is the skill set McMillan brings to the Jayhawks this season. He obviously has enough talent to catch the attention of the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., which puts together the preseason watchlist.

Hopefully, head coach Lance Leipold, assistant head coach Andy Kotelnicki and offensive coordinators Jim Zebrowski and Matt Lubick can figure out ways to utilize McMillan. The receiver could be a massive weapon for the offense if properly utilized.

McMillan brings some gravitas to the passing game. If he's able to stretch defenses, it should help receivers like Pickett, Kubecka, and Nagy find space or better matchups. McMillan is also athletic enough to create positive yardage after he catches passes on shorter routes.

McMillan will occupy enough attention to help out the running game as well. Defenses will need to account for him on all plays, and that could open up some spaces for the running backs too.
